Cannabis concentrates separate the cannabinoid and terpene-rich resin from the rest of the hemp plant. The result is a more potent, more flavor-concentrated product. The category covers a wide range of textures, prices, and processing methods.
Most Virginia hemp consumers see concentrates in vape carts, dabs at private events, and as ingredients in edibles and infused flower. Here is a practical guide to the major types.
The Basic Distinction
Hemp concentrates fall into two big buckets:
Solventless: Made using mechanical processes (heat, pressure, ice, water) without chemical solvents. Cleaner profile. Typically more expensive.
Solvent-based: Made using butane, propane, ethanol, or supercritical CO2 to dissolve the resin from the plant. More efficient extraction. Requires careful purging to remove residual solvent.

Live Resin
How it's made: Fresh-frozen flower (frozen at harvest, never dried) extracted with a hydrocarbon solvent like butane.
Texture: Sauce-like, sometimes with sugar-like crystals. Bright color.
Why it matters: Freezing at harvest preserves volatile terpenes that would otherwise degrade during drying. Live resin typically has the highest terpene retention of any concentrate. The flavor is closer to the live plant than any other extract.
Common in: Premium vape carts, dab products.
Rosin
How it's made: Heat and pressure squeeze resin out of flower or bubble hash. No solvents.
Texture: Sticky, taffy-like. Color depends on starting material (light yellow for fresh hash rosin, darker for older flower rosin).
Why it matters: Rosin is the gold standard solventless option. Quality varies a lot based on starting material. Hash rosin (made from bubble hash) is generally considered the cleanest, highest-quality concentrate available.
Common in: High-end vape carts, dabs, edibles in premium markets.
Live Rosin
How it's made: Fresh-frozen flower goes through ice water hash extraction first to make bubble hash. The hash is then pressed into rosin.
Texture: Similar to regular rosin but typically lighter in color and more aromatic.
Why it matters: Combines the terpene preservation of live resin with the solventless purity of rosin. Most expensive concentrate per gram. The cleanest, most flavorful option for connoisseurs.
Common in: Premium dabs, top-shelf vape carts.
Distillate
How it's made: Crude extract goes through additional processing (winterization, decarboxylation, distillation) to isolate specific cannabinoids. Most distillate is 80%+ THC by weight.
Texture: Clear or amber, viscous, syrup-like.
Why it matters: Distillate is potent and consistent but mostly stripped of terpenes during processing. Producers often add terpenes back, either cannabis-derived or from other sources. This is what fills most mid-tier vape carts.
Common in: Most affordable vape carts, edibles, tinctures.
Shatter, Wax, Crumble
These are different textures of solvent-based concentrate, usually made with butane (BHO) or propane (PHO).
- Shatter: Glass-like, brittle. Translucent.
- Wax: Soft, opaque, like soft butter.
- Crumble: Dry, crumbly texture. Easy to break apart.
Texture differences come from temperature and agitation during processing. Cannabinoid and terpene content can be similar across all three. Once a popular category, partially displaced by live resin and rosin in premium markets.
Hash and Bubble Hash
The original concentrate. Made by separating trichomes (the resin glands on cannabis flowers) from the rest of the plant material.
Dry sift hash: Plant material is shaken or rubbed across a screen to knock trichomes loose.
Bubble hash (ice water hash): Plant material is agitated in ice water. Cold makes trichomes brittle, water washes them off, and progressively finer screens collect them.
Bubble hash is also the starting material for live rosin and most premium solventless products.
What to Look For When You Buy
A few signals of quality:
COA available. Should show cannabinoid content, terpene profile, and residual solvents at minimum.
Fresh-frozen or live designation. If the product claims "live resin" or "live rosin," the source flower should have been frozen at harvest.
Color and clarity. Solventless rosin should be amber to gold. Dark brown often signals older or less-clean material. Live resin should be bright. Off-color or dull live resin is suspect.
Smell. A high-terpene concentrate should smell strongly of the plant. Distillate-based products often smell less natural because the terpenes were added back.
Residual solvent test. For any solvent-based concentrate, the COA should show residual solvents below action levels. Most labs report parts per million.
What's Legal in Virginia
Hemp concentrates are subject to Virginia's 2 mg total THC per package retail cap and the 25-to-1 CBD-to-THC ratio rule. We broke down the cap math in our 2 mg cap explainer.
In practice, that means hemp-derived THC concentrate products on Virginia shelves are mostly low-dose carts and tinctures. High-dose dabs and most marijuana-derived concentrates fall outside the legal hemp framework in Virginia.
Bottom Line
The pecking order in concentrates: live rosin sits at the top for terpene retention and purity. Live resin is close behind with a lower price tag. Regular rosin is the best solventless mid-tier option. Distillate is the workhorse of cheap carts. The COA tells you which is which more reliably than the marketing.
