Anyone using hemp-derived THC products should know how long the metabolites stay detectable. The answer depends on the test, the user's body, and how often they consume. Hemp-derived THC is chemically identical to marijuana-derived THC. A drug test cannot tell the difference.
Here is the practical breakdown.
Why THC Lingers
THC is fat-soluble. It stores in body fat and releases slowly over days and weeks after use. The body breaks down THC into metabolites, including THC-COOH, which is what most drug tests actually detect. THC-COOH is non-psychoactive but stays in the system longer than active THC.
The half-life of THC-COOH is about 3 to 4 days in occasional users, longer in heavy users. Detection windows are governed by which fluid or tissue is being tested and the cutoff threshold the lab uses.
Urine Tests (the most common)
Urine tests are by far the most common drug test used by employers. They detect THC-COOH at a standard cutoff of 50 ng/mL.
Detection windows by use pattern:
- One-time use: 3 days after consumption
- Occasional use (1-3 times per week): 5 to 7 days
- Frequent use (4-6 times per week): 10 to 15 days
- Daily heavy use: 30 to 45 days, sometimes longer
Body weight, body fat percentage, hydration, and metabolism all shift these numbers. Heavy users with higher body fat retain THC metabolites longer.
A more sensitive 20 ng/mL cutoff is used for some tests, which extends detection windows by a few days across the board.
Saliva (Oral Fluid) Tests
Saliva tests are increasingly used at workplaces because they are non-invasive and detect recent use rather than residual metabolites. They are the closest thing to a real-time impairment test, though they do not measure impairment directly.
Detection windows:
- Light or one-time use: up to 24 hours
- Frequent use: 1 to 3 days
- Heavy daily use: 1 week or longer
Saliva testing standards vary. Most labs use 4 ng/mL as the cutoff for THC.
Blood Tests
Blood tests detect active THC, not metabolites. Active THC drops fast after consumption.
Detection windows:
- One-time use: 1 to 2 days
- Frequent use: 7 days
- Heavy daily use: 2 weeks (active THC), longer for stored metabolites
Blood tests are most often used after vehicle accidents, in DUI investigations, and in clinical settings. Virginia uses blood tests for cannabis DUI, though as we covered in our earlier post on the cannabis DUI testing gap, blood THC levels do not reliably correlate with impairment.
Hair Tests
Hair tests detect drug use over a long timeframe. THC metabolites accumulate in hair follicles as hair grows. Standard hair samples cover the past 90 days.
Detection windows:
- Single use: usually below standard cutoff (50 pg/mg)
- Occasional use: 90 days
- Heavy use: 90 days, sometimes longer with retesting
Hair tests have a high false positive rate when low-dose THC users live or work in areas with second-hand cannabis exposure. Many employers have moved away from hair testing for cannabis specifically.
What Affects Detection Times
Six factors shift detection windows:
- Frequency of use. The biggest factor. Daily users retain metabolites for weeks. Once-a-month users clear in days.
- Body fat percentage. THC metabolites store in fat. Higher body fat means longer detection.
- Metabolism rate. Faster metabolism clears THC faster. Genetic differences in liver enzymes (especially CYP3A4) affect this.
- Dose per session. A 2 mg edible clears faster than a 10 mg dose. Virginia's 2 mg per package cap actually keeps detection windows relatively short for occasional users.
- Hydration. Hydration speeds urine excretion of metabolites slightly.
- Exercise. Strenuous exercise mobilizes stored fat, which can briefly increase blood and urine THC metabolite levels. The effect is short-lived but real.
What Does Not Speed Up the Clear
A lot of online advice on this is bad. The following do not meaningfully reduce detection times:
- Detox drinks. Most are diuretics that briefly dilute urine. Modern lab tests check creatinine and specific gravity to flag dilution. Failing the dilution check is treated like a positive result by many employers.
- Cranberry juice, lemon water, vinegar, niacin. None of these clear THC metabolites faster.
- Sweating it out. Sweat contains very low THC concentrations. Saunas and exercise do not meaningfully speed clearance.
- Same-day "cleansers." If THC-COOH is in your fat tissue, no oral product is going to flush it in a day.
The only thing that reliably reduces detection is time without consumption.
What This Means for Hemp Consumers
Hemp-derived THC products are legal in Virginia under the 2 mg per package retail cap. We broke that down in our 2 mg hemp cap explainer. But hemp THC and marijuana THC are chemically identical. A drug test will not distinguish between them.
If you are subject to drug testing, plan around the detection windows above. A reasonable rule of thumb for occasional users:
- 1 week off before a urine test
- 24 to 48 hours off before a saliva test
- 1 to 2 days off before a blood test
- Hair tests cannot really be timed around for regular users
For frequent users, longer abstinence is the only reliable option.
Bottom Line
Detection time depends on use frequency, body composition, and test type. Urine tests catch occasional use for about a week and daily use for over a month. Saliva tests focus on recent use. Blood tests detect active THC. Hair tests cover three months. Time off is the only reliable clear.
